I knew I had to reach for more, to honor their sacrifices,” Tinoco recalls.
Refusal of the Call
Initially, the world of academia was a distant concern for Tinoco, secondary to the immediate needs and dynamics of family life. The prospect of navigating the complexities of college, coupled with the pressure of living up to his family’s sacrifices, stirred feelings of apprehension and doubt in his early academic career.
Meeting the Mentor
Guidance came from Renuka Gunawardena, a support advisor at Madison College, who recognized Tinoco’s potential and nudged him towards opportunities that expanded his horizons. She introduced him to the Gateway to College program, which became a critical step in Tinoco’s academic and personal development, helping him earn college and high school credits simultaneously. “Renuka opened doors I never knew existed and pushed me towards paths that seemed beyond my reach,” says Tinoco gratefully.
Crossing the Threshold
Tinoco’s commitment to challenging himself was solidified through his volunteer work at Agrace Hospice. Witnessing the impacts of memory diseases on families, he found a profound purpose in biochemistry, dedicating his career to the pursuit of solutions for dementia, thereby stepping into a new world of scientific inquiry and community service. “Seeing the pain and hope in the eyes of those affected by memory diseases, I felt a deep call to action—it became personal,” he reflects.
Tests, Allies, and Enemies
The path was not easy. The rigorous demands of his studies, coupled with the responsibilities as a DREAM Scholar and his role at home, tested his resolve. However, allies like his family, peers at Madison College, and the broader network of DREAM Scholars nationwide provided him with the support and encouragement needed to persevere. “It’s the strength of my family and the camaraderie of my peers that carried me through the toughest times,” Tinoco acknowledges.
Approach to the Inmost Cave
Tinoco’s participation in the DREAM 2024 convention represented a critical juncture. Here, he was required to articulate his journey and vision on a national stage, confronting both his fears and his potential. This experience not only honed his leadership skills but also deepened his commitment to his community and career goals. “Standing before that crowd, sharing my story, I realized the power of my voice and the impact of my journey,” he shares passionately.

The conference, with its opportunities and high expectations, served as both a trial and a transformation point for him.

Emerging victorious, Tinoco gained not just recognition as a DREAM Scholar but also a renewed sense of purpose and confidence. He established valuable connections with influential leaders and peers, which would support his future endeavors in the scientific community and beyond. “Becoming a DREAM Scholar isn’t just a title; it’s a responsibility to lead, inspire, and uplift others,” he asserts firmly.
The Road Back
Returning to Madison College with newfound insights and motivations, Tinoco is now more determined than ever to contribute to his college and the broader scientific field. His plans to pursue a master’s degree in biochemistry symbolize his commitment to returning the knowledge and opportunities he has been afforded.
