How a Couple’s Passion for Coffee Revived Tradition and Community in Rurrenabaque
Roots Coffee stands as a testament to passion, heritage, and a deep-seated connection with the community in the picturesque town of Rurrenabaque. Rurrenabaque is a small town in the north of Bolivia, on the banks of the Beni River in South America. Born from a legacy of coffee farmers in Coroico, Alejandra and Rogelio’s journey into the world of coffee seemed almost destined. Their inherent passion for coffee, enriched by their familial ties to its cultivation, led them to a realization during a visit to Rurrenabaque—a town conspicuously devoid of a quality coffee shop. This gap presented not just a business opportunity, but a call to roots that resonated deeply with both.
The origins of Roots Coffee were firmly planted in a history as rich as the coffee itself. “Our grandparents were coffee farmers in Coroico, you could say it was in our blood,” Alejandra recalls. The idea that coffee is part of their “culture and customs” provided a foundational narrative for their venture, marrying tradition with modern entrepreneurial spirit.
Ordinary World
For Alejandra and Rogelio, life before Roots Coffee was stable but unfulfilling in deeper, existential ways. “We had good, stable jobs, health and social insurance—a quite stable life,” Rogelio shared. Yet, beneath this stability lurked a yearning for something more meaningful, a venture that would connect them back to their roots and forward to their dreams.
Call to Adventure
The absence of a quality café in Rurrenabaque struck them during their visit, sparking an idea fueled by necessity and potential. “We opened Roots Coffee because when we visited Rurrenabaque and looked for a good coffee to spend the afternoon, we realized there was none,” explained Rogelio. This realization prompted a decision that was both a risk and a remarkable opportunity to fill a void in a community they felt increasingly connected to.
Refusal of the Call
The decision to leave their comfortable city life was met with internal conflict and significant anxiety. Alejandra expressed their initial fears: “Leaving our city, our family and friends, for Rurrenabaque where we knew just two or three people, not knowing if the café would be successful—it was terrifying.”
Meeting with the Mentor
Upon their arrival in Rurrenabaque, the local community’s welcoming arms acted as mentors. “The solidarity and hospitality of the people in Rurrenabaque made it possible for Roots Coffee to become what it is today,” said Rogelio, recounting how locals supported them from the very beginning, providing plants and decorations that they cherish and display in their café.
Crossing the Threshold
Committing to their venture, they moved to Rurrenabaque and fully embraced their entrepreneurial journey. “This was our point of no return, fully committing to being the heroes of our own story,” Rogelio declared.
Tests, Allies, and Enemies
The initial months tested their resolve deeply. “We worked up to 16 or 17 continuous hours a day, just the two of us, during the first year. It was exhausting,” Alejandra admits. Their endurance through these times was their trial by fire, laying the groundwork for their future success.
Approach to the Inmost Cave
Their major crisis came during times of low tourism, a challenge exacerbated by external social and environmental issues. “When tourism drops drastically due to countrywide issues, it hits us hard,” Alejandra explained, highlighting the vulnerability of their business to factors beyond their control.
Ordeal
The support from the local community during these challenging times proved pivotal. “Even in low times, the locals supported us and lifted our spirits,” Rogelio emotionally noted. This solidarity was crucial in sustaining them through the toughest times.
Reward (Seizing the Sword)
Overcoming these challenges, Roots Coffee established itself as a specialty coffee hub, unique in Rurrenabaque. “We are the only specialty café here, a testament to our journey and the support of our community,” said Alejandra with pride.
The Road Back
With their success, the couple looked to the future, planning to expand Roots Coffee into a chain across Bolivia’s tourist locations, aspiring to share their passion and heritage on a larger scale.
Resurrection
Their continuous innovation in coffee preparation techniques, including acquiring modern roasting machines and professional Italian coffee machines, ensured the highest quality in every cup. “Our commitment to quality is unwavering,” asserted Rogelio.
Return with the Elixir
Today, Roots Coffee is not just a café; it is a community landmark and a symbol of perseverance and community collaboration. “The hard work and responsibility always have their reward,” Alejandra reflected. “Never make excuses; the life of a business depends on being there for your customers.”
Their story is a vivid illustration of being the heroes of their own narrative, firmly rooted in their heritage and blossoming through their contributions to their community. Through Roots Coffee, Alejandra and Rogelio have not only transformed their lives but also the coffee culture in Rurrenabaque.
